Feeders: Taking Down - Putting Up
Tips from John Gardner - The Backyard Birder
Many people keep their feeders up all year around. It helps the birds and does not discourage them from their natural instincts such as eating insects in your backyard or migrating.
Spring Feeder Schedule
- Do not take your seed feeders down until the leaves are fully out on the trees.
- Your summer feeders (fruit, nectar, sunflower hearts, thistle) should be up by early March
- Change your suet feeders over to a melted fat/meal blend for the summer. They tend not to melt.
Winter Feeder Schedule
- You should put your seed feeders back up by the first week of October.
- Hummingbird Feeders should stay up until mid October.
- Fruit Feeders (bluebird) should stay up until Christmas
- Change your suet feeders over to a melted fat/seed blend for winter
