The best way to prevent disease at your feeder is by cleaning your feeder.

Cleaning the Feeder:

Take your feeder down and brush out any debris. Then wash it in warm soapy water. Rinse with clear water to remove any soap scum. Then dip the feeder into a solution of 1 part household bleach and 10 parts clear water. Allow the feeder to dry and put back into your feeder station, but only after you have cleaned in around your feeder station.

Cleaning the Feeding Station.

At least once a month in Winter, and once a week in Summer you should clean around your feeding station. This involves raking any seed hulls or debris from the ground. (Do not put these materials in your compost pile or use them for compost around plants. Sunflower hulls have a natural plant killer chemical in them and will kill any plant material the contact.) Include a cleaning any birdbaths, suet cages, etc. in and around your feeding station
